 Dear friends,

Today we can take one of the most interesting and popilar one-day tours for Bulgaria going to Veliko Turnovo and Arbanassi village. Starting from Sofia, the tour takes about 10 hours altogether, including driving time for about 3 hours one-way. Therefore it is possible to start the tour at 8 am, 9 am or 10 am in order to have enough time to see everything and not to be late coming back to Sofia.

Veliko Turnovo is a relatively small town with about seventy thousand people population, and it is located in the Northern slopes of the Balkan range mountain (Stara Planina). The most significant historical site there is the fortress hill Tzarevetz, where the king from the Second Bulgarian Kingdom had their palace and were rulling the country. The Second Bulgarian Kingdom lasted between 1186 and 1393 when Bulgaria was conquered by the Ottoman Empire. Today the tourist enjoy a one and a half hour walk up the hill, entering through the three gates, and climbing up he hill to the Patriarch residence and the Church. The walk continues t the Execution Rock, passing through may ruins from mediaval churches and army barracks. The altitude of the hill above the town reveals to us beautiful view over the city and over accross to the little gorge of Yantra river.

Next in our tour comes the village of Arbanassi - an architectural and historical reserve, giving us the opportunity to enter a house-museum, dating from 17th century - Konstancalieva house, and aslo to enjoy the amazingly depicted churches from the same period - "Nativity of Christ" and "Archiangels Michael and Gabriel", where by a prior arrangement we may listen to a small choir which performs the typical Orthodox chanting.

Accroding your preferences lunch can take place either at some really nice restaurant downtown in Veliko Turnovo, where there is plenty of delicious food for everyone's taste or in a traditional restarant, usually with a garden at Arbanassi.

Before heading back to Sofia you will have some free time to take a stroll along the artisan's street - Samovodska charshiya, where you will see quite a few of the craftsmen's workshop, showing us the traditions in coppersmithing, jewelry making, pottery and painting from the  first half of nineteen century.
